I understand your concern and I’d like to remove this requirement as
well. The problem is that gnome-screensaver now relies on gnome-session
for the computation of idle time. If it can’t compute idle time, it is
useless since the screen won’t lock automatically.

Fixing this correctly requires including the old code conditionally,
when the gnome-session D-Bus interface is not available. If you can
provide a tested patch to that effect, I think it would be worth
including.
