Outline of steps -

1.  Start gnome-settings-daemon if it isn't running
2.  System / Preferences / Sessions / Session Options / Remember
currently running applications (saves session in ~/.gnome2/session)
3.  Log out
4.  CTRL-ALT-F1 or whatever console you want to go to
5.  As root, /etc/init.d/gdm stop, then gdm start

No funky gnome-settings-daemon messages after that.
