I've tried to reproduce it using version 0.12.0 by having a different user
run 'esd -nobeeps' and then starting rhythmbox. In my case, rhythmbox does
not crash and plays music just fine even without esd running as a different
user:

$ sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*
                     USER        PID ACCESS COMMAND
/dev/snd/controlC0:  1000       14494 F.... mixer_applet2
/dev/snd/pcmC0D0p:   1001       31467 F...m esd
                     1000       31526 F...m rhythmbox
/dev/snd/timer:      1001       31467 f.... esd
                     1000       31526 f.... rhythmbox

I guess this bug can be closed now. Thanks,

Javier
