GDM doesn't start and a lot of unrelated applications (like iceweasel, pidgin, VLC and others) and all 
gnome applications fail to load. It gives the error 
symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0: undefined symbol: g_dgettext
