After upgrading to libgtk2.0-0 2.16, the Notification Area Applet no longer
works properly in a vertical panel: It positions the icons next to each
other horizontally, so as of a certain number of icons some of them can't be
seen. This was fixed upstream in 2.25.91:

    Clock Applet
    - Use new GTK+ feature to change orientation of GtkBox instead of
      custom code
    Notification Area Applet
    - Use new GTK+ feature to change orientation of GtkBox instead of

It would be nice if these fixes could be backported.
