Bug#531342: gnome-panel: Notification area doesn't free icons space when applications are closed

Since version 2.24 the notification area in gnome panel fails to free space allocated to an application icon when that application exits.
As a consequence the notification area tends to grow each time I launch an app that sits in the area.
The only solution is to kill and restart gnome-panel.
I have attached a screenshot to show the problem.
