up produces an unbearable screeching sound with distortion until the mouse button
is unpressed. If the slider is adjusted with the wheel on the mouse, again, with
each 'tick' the distortion occurs until perhaps the next plateau. It's almost
as if a factor which governs the amount to increase the volume is off by a magnitude
of 10 or something. This was working until a couple of weeks ago.
This problem was also reported in Ubuntu

when using mplayer is to use the OSS audio output (mplayer -ao oss). The card in question
is an Ensoniq 1371.
