I can confirm that this has been introduced by the recent switch
from metacity to mutter (which was done not by me, but by
gnome-session). After purging mutter from my system (otherwise
gnome-session insists on using it instead of metacity) and using 
metacity again the problem is gone.

I don't know if that is a mutter problem or a g-s-d problem, please
reassign appropriately
