When I try that, it wants to remove empathy, pidgin, and some  
associated libraries, as well as gnome and gnome-desktop-envoronment.   
It also tells me that a whole bunch of packages (essentially all of  
gnome) are no longer needed and should be disposed of with "apt-get  
autoremove".

I could live without pidgin or empathy (I'm not an IM user) losing  
most of gnome would be kind of inconvenient...
