Bug#578758: gnome-appearance-properties: very sluggish to display backgrounds

gnome-appearance-properties calculated/loads thumbnails of
background images synchronously - the UI is held up until
the images have been loaded. It is noticably sluggish with
just a small number of backgrounds.
