I’m not sure iceweasel still uses gnome-vfs, maybe it uses gio now.

Either way, it’s gnome-session that sets XDG_DATA_DIRS to a directory
that contains GNOME default file associations. If you use iceweasel
outside a GNOME session, it will use whatever choice is the first one.
