I had a very short discussion with mvo, and some more ideas. The
following explains the current state of plans I currently have and does
not necessarily represent the plans of future me, mvo, Canonical,
Ubuntu, your government, Santa Claus, or Rudolph, the red-nosed
reindeer.
So, the initial stack for wheezy could look like:
* Backend service: PackageKit
* Update management & notification: PackageKit
* Application install/remove: Software Center on PackageKit
* Package install/remove: PackageKit
The synaptic problem is solved like this [idea by mvo]:
* Synaptic is removed from the dependencies of 'gnome' (=> not DVD1)
* Synaptic is enhanced to install via PackageKit if not root
* Extra functionality is done via an org.debian.Synaptic service
The future of software-center:
* Replace the aptdaemon backend by a PackageKit one (for now: add one)
We will need some further enhancements to PackageKit, I am reporting
them in the BTS so we can track and/or fix this.
