I've got the same issue with an up-to-date Squeeze install and it works
exactly as described by Alexander:

However, if I click on my user account to enter my password, but use

I'm running Debian on my two year old HP laptop.  I don't know how fast the
hard drive is but probably it's not too slow! ;)
