When using gdm, my laptop shows the nvidia splashscreen for a moment 
(indicating that the driver has been properly compiled and loaded) but 
then the X server, after trying a couple more times, gives up.  There 
are no error messages in the X log files to explain the problem.  I put 
it down to gdm, because if I disable gdm (chmod 644) and use 'startx' to 
start the X server, everything is fine.  And I have just installed and 
used xdm to start, and it works fine as well.
