I gave it a shot and it was quite doable. I submitted a patch upstream:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=607254#c7

I think releasing a stable release with a removed battstat-applet should
be avoided. Please consider applying the patch so it gets more testing
before the release than if we’d wait for upstream to release with it.

I’m running the patched version on my thinkpad T400 and it works fine so
far.
