It is not possible to fix this in sensible-browser or in xdg-utils
without having them look at which browser they are starting - which they
don’t know, since they only start gnome-www-browser, which in turn is an
alternative.
Fixing this would mean replace all gnome-www-browser alternatives by
scripts which can interpret the same command-line options. I don’t think
the gain is worth the added complexity. If you want to open links in a
new tab, you can select as well the application in which you want them
to be opened.
