that one is from March 15 2010, only two weeks old.

i can't remember exactly which bug report i found, but it was probably
this one from 2007:

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=492315

the sole comment in 492315 mentions that it was a known problem
mentioned to in the Roadmap for Gnome 2.2 (which is old enough that it
has disappeared from the web).

that would probably be an OK solution if i wanted to use my system as
if it was some monstrous imitation of Windows with it's own version of
regedit.exe and undocumented magic values to tweak in a registry.

strangely, i don't.

btw, i've since found that locking down the panels works most of the
time but not always. a "better" workaround is to avoid the problem
entirely by configuring Wine to emulate a desktop. then it doesn't
matter if windows games change the screen resolution as all they change
is the size of the wine "desktop" window.

i've been using wine like this since not long after i posted that bug
report.

works better for me, anyway, since i don't like or want full screen
games...i don't like my computer being like a single-tasking throwback
to the 1980s just because i'm playing a game. instead, i like being
able to pause them for a while while i check my mail or do other things
on the computer, without risking messing up the resolution of the game
or X, or even locking them up - i've had to ssh in to kill X (and
everything i had running, browser & terminal windows, etc) in some cases
to get the use of my computer back after switching to/from a full-screen
windows game.
