Bug#582106: gnome-panel: bad hinting for new keyboard layout switcher in the notification area

Hello,

Before may 2010, gnome provided an applet to switch keyboard layouts. That
applet has been replaced by a widget in the notification area (automatically
enabled when
multiple layouts are configured by the user).
However, the font hinting for the new widget is much worse than the former
applet hinting. On the old applet, the font quality was similar to the clock
applet characters (see attached screenshot).

I also noticed that this issue impact depends on the font size (11 points, on
the screenshot)
