The base-config package has been antiquated since Debian Lenny.

A lot has happened in gnome-control-center since this bug was 
initially filed in 2005. I think everything that should be 
configurable from a GUI is available today.

While synaptic can reinstall packages, it cannot run dpkg-reconfigure 
on them as requested in the initial report. Anyway, since nowadays 
systems are really easy to configure using GUI tools and the need to 
manually run dpkg-reconfigure should be an exeptional case at least, I 
think this bug can safely be closed. I'll leave it up to you, though. ;)
