Yes, this is because openbox-gnome-session is completely full of crack.
I mean, WTF is about setting GConf keys at startup, possibly making the
default GNOME session unusable?

The script can be replaced by this very simple one:
        #! /bin/sh
        WINDOW_MANAGER=openbox
        export WINDOW_MANAGER
        exec gnome-session
