That's strange, I can not reproduce what you describe with my regular
xmonad configuration nor with the minimal/gnome xmonad.hs:

  import XMonad
  import XMonad.Config.Gnome
  
  main = xmonad gnomeConfig

The workspace switcher appears as usual.
I cannot see any relevant difference in packages version, but maybe I'm
missing something...
