Bug#610826: Headless servers can waste a core of CPU due to this bug

Hello,

I have also experienced this problem, on a headless server;
one that has gdm3 installed so that someone clueless can
plug in a monitor, keyboard, and mouse and be comfortable.

A sample Xlog is attached. Debian Squeeze (6.0.1).

The design I would like to see is one where
a simple "Press any key to continue" message/dialog
is presented when the X server dies due to anything
other than user request. Even respawning after a
sleep period is enough to wake up all the hardware
and consume so it makes sense that the system know
there's someone sitting there _needing_ to consume.
Requiring some sort of user acknowledgment
is not noticeably more awkward than the re-login
process which the user already
has to go through should X die.

Respawning should only be the default when gdm3 is
configured to automatically login.

Installing and using slim instead is a work-around.

Regards,
