Hi Michael,
I did the test you asked and I noticed the following:
1. I kill gnome-power-manager and I run pm-suspend the laptop suspend
and I'm able to resume;
2. I suspend closing the lid with gnome-power-manager when I resume the
screen is locked and I'm unable to type the password to unlock the
screen. There is no caret in the password field and I'm unable to click
on it. Also, the fan becomes very noisy as if the processor is working
very hard; Switching to tty1 and back doesn't help.
During the test, unable to unlock the screen, I switched to tty1 and
logged in as root to collect the log files you asked, since the fan was
working very hard I used top to check which process was using the
processor but memory and processor seemed normal.
However, after spending some time in tty1 copying and testing I switched
back to tty7 and this time I was able to unlock the screen (I noticed
the caret blinking in the password field). Still to reset the fan speed
I had to restart the laptop.
Note that the fan speed increases as soon as suspending starts (using
either method) and when it resumes the fan is very noisy. With just
pm-suspend however the fan went goes back to normal after a few seconds.
I can't see anything unusual in the log files, I attach them anyway.
This laptop one more problem with gnome which may be related. I
submitted it as bug #619457
Thank you,
Paolo.
