Package: gdm3
Version: 2.30.5-6squeeze4
Distribution: Debian 6.0.2.1-i386-DVD, Updated to Debian 6.0.3-i386-DVD, Using
Debian 6.0.3-i386-Update-DVD-Volumes 1 and 2
Hardware: MSI MS-7108 Motherboard with Intel Pentium 4, LGA 775, 3.0 GHz, Dual Processor CPU,
Intel 848P, ICH5, 2 GB of 400 MHz DDR SDRAM, AGP 8x graphics with a DVI monitor.
Symptoms: As it stands, there is no keyboard short-cut binding for normally exiting the gdm3. This can only be
done by using the "Log Out user" option in the top panel menu "System", which brings up the "Switch user or
Log Out" requester. There is a "Logout" keybinding shown in the "Keyboard short-cuts" editor, which is bound to
Ctrl+Alt+Del, but this brings up the "Reboot the entire computer" requester, instead of the "Switch user or Log Out"
requester. One can not change the function name of this entry as supplied (it is somewhat built-in) to "Reboot",
and add a "Logout" entry, as the custom keyboard short-cut entry demands a function name to execute for the
programmed keystroke, and the name or even the accessibility of that function for bringing up the actual "Log Out"
requester are not known. The instant exit from the display manager is a very useful function, which is not accessible
at the moment. I know how to get to a console terminal from within gdm3, but that is not the desired function as
gdm3 would still be running in that case. For the record, I always do a "text" console log-in, with a "startx" to
start the gdm3 when I want the window manager to run. When gdm3 exits with a normal "Log Out user", the control
returns to this main text console, with no display manager running.
Questions: 1) Where are the panel menu options stored in the system? I have looked all over and I can only find the
entries for the applications menus, not the entries for system call type menus.
2) In the "xdm" display manager, the keystroke sequence Ctrl+Alt+BackSpace is used to perform the "Log out"
function or to even perform the instant exit from the display manager without a requester. gdm3 is an "xdm"
replacement with this very useful function (especially when the program "gnome-panel" stops responding due
to some other bug) deleted. Is there any particular reason for this, other than that it is a bug?
