Bug#614832: gnome-applets: mixer applet shows 7 error windows when logging in "Media player device error"

When logging in, I get 7 identical pop up dialogs with the mixer applet
logo on it saying "Media player device error" as title and "Unable to
open the (null) (null) device" as message.

I have no idea why this happens. The applet works fine. It has worked
fine for years, this started yesterday. I can't find an obvious package
upgrade that could have caused this. (I upgrade daily in testing.)
