The gnome panel disappears after some usage. It happens seemingly randomly. It also happened when I first logged into gnome. Since that initial login, whenever I login now the panel doesn't immediately appear, but does after a pause. However after some usage, the panel disappears. I have kde installed as well, and both kdm and gdm3 although I use kdm as my primary logon screen.
