There actually is such an option, but it's not readily visible. The following
command will disable the background image and should leave you with nothing
else but a black background image:

$ gconftool-2 --set /apps/quadrapassel/options/usebgimage --type bool 0

(Aside from the fact that this option could be made more visible, this isn't
really a bug, and should perhaps be closed.)
