I have a similiar problem: the difference is that for me the brightness
is set to its maximum value.
I can always see these brightness changes when gdm3 starts (then after
login Gnome restore brightness back) and when i use the Gnome "switch
user" function.
Seems that there is a command somewhere in gdm3 startup phase that
trigger this.
I think it's important to mention that i have an i855 chipset and i'm
using:
xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.13.0-5
libdrm-intel1 2.4.21-1~squeeze3
If that helps, booting with linux-image-2.6.37-trunk-686
(-1~experimental.1) i see the same when the kernel switch to KMS:
brightness rise up to its maximum value. But not with 2.6.32 from
Squeeze (nor with .34, .35, .36). In the next days i'll file a bug to
the kernel team for this.
Instead the gdm3 brightness change happens with both 2.6.32 and 2.6.37.
For the other kernel in the middle i don't know, since when i used them
i was not using gdm3.
