I think I find the problem now and we can close this bug now.
$ cat ~/.xsession-errors
/etc/gdm3/Xsession: Beginning session setup...
/etc/profile: 32: Syntax error: Bad function name

I removed /etc/gdm3/daemon.conf and 'aptitude reinstall gdm3'.
Reinstalling gdm3 did not install /etc/gdm3/daemon.conf, so I am missing
this conf file. However, 'aptitude purge gdm3;aptitude install gdm3'
brings this conf file back.
