Package: gnome-settings-daemon
Version: 2.30.2-2
Severity: important
--- Please enter the report below this line. ---
gnome-settings-daemon sometimes crashes after login, it happens all the
times with kernel 3.6.37 and sometimes in 3.6.38. It also occasionally
(rarely) happened with early releases of kernel 2.6.32.
After login, the screens starts flickering while the desktop geometry
(as seen in Workspace Switcher) changes continuously, from about a 2x3
to a 2x4 rectangle. Something like xinerama with an external monitor.
After a few seconds of flickering (5 sec to over a minute)
gnome-settings-daemon finally crashes, the theme changes leaving gnome
looking like bare X (sort of redhat 90's look) and the desktop geometry
settles to widescreen (the rectangles in Workspace Switcher are about
2x4). Beside the look, the system then works normally.
The crash happens after a fresh boot of Debian, as I normally just login
once after switching on the laptop and I don't switch users.
In kernels 2.6.32 (earlier releases) and 2.6.38 rebooting normally
solves the problem and the frequency of crashes seems to be random. In
kernel 2.6.37 it crashes all the times.
This is a HP ProBook 4510s laptop with a 1366x768 LCD and 2 external
video ports (VGA and HDMI). No external monitor is connected.
As I suspect it may have something to do with X and/or the kernel
modules I also attach Xorg log and other related information.
Thank you,
Paolo.
