inotify would be linux-only, which might present problems for kfreebsd
and hurd.

Given the lineage of consolekit, i'd assume such a feed would probably
be a dbus service or something, which i think would be more effectively
cross-platform.

But again, i'm pretty clueless on the bigger-picture architecture here
(though i'm learning a lot from researching this bug :P )
