To be clear,
after your messages i tried to disable GDM and to use XDM as alternative 
desktop manager.
However, even if I start XDM at boot i can't use keyboard and mouse.

I didn't have the time to try that.
Later in the evening I will try disabling the desktop manager at all to 
verify if the keyboard is working when on console. I will let you know.
