I'd have said the same, unfortunately on my LXDE/Squeeze I got:

------------------------
$ dpkg -l 'gvfs*'
[…]
||/ Nom                 Version             Description
+++-===================-===================-======================================================
ii  gvfs                1.6.4-3             userspace virtual
filesystem - server
ii  gvfs-backends       1.6.4-3             userspace virtual
filesystem - backends
un  gvfs-bin            <néant>            (aucune description n'est
disponible)
ii  gvfs-fuse           1.6.4-3             userspace virtual
filesystem - fuse server
------------------------

Is a running background service needed in user's session to make use of
Gvfs?
