Hm, could you elaborate on this? Why is it obvious that no metacity
process has been started?
To be clear: You are trying to start a default GNOME session, i.e. not
the fallback one. And your hardwared is 3D capable, so should be able to
run gnome-shell. But metacity is started anyway?
Do you maybe have an autostart file for metacity in ~/.config/autostart?
