You are absolutely right; while I don’t use most of GNOME, I do run
gnome-settings-daemon, and dropping it from my ~/.xsession solves this
issue.

Thank you for your help and sorry for the noise.  I didn’t bother to
actually hunt down the culprit since it seemed obvious …
