This isn't solved yet? I have exactly the same problem, but with an
intel graphics card. I remember shell worked nice when I first installed
it (back in june). Probably some update broken it.
I suspect either intel driver, clutter or gjs ... (those look newer than
ones I used before).
Also, I have lot of following messages filling up my syslog when shell
is on, but I managed to solve it by recompiling.

Note: Does not happen in fallback mode.
