Bug#645576: gdm3: gdm display screen hopelessly garbled when baobab comes up

Package: gdm3
Version: 3.0.4-3
Severity: important
/usr is nearly full on this machine. I recently updated this sid
installation, and upon restarting gdm3, i got a warning dialog about
/usr being nearly full. the warning dialog itself looked pretty
visually garbled. But when i clicked "examine the situation", the
baobab windows that popped up were even worse (see attached
screenshot).
It seems problematic that there were several baobab windows opened.
It was also troubling that it was difficult to close the baobab
windows because my mouse cursor was jumping all around, and the
windows were flickering in and out of existence.
Even attempting to log in doesn't seem to work cleanly, because the
mouse cursor and window drawing are behaving so strangely.
Maybe this needs to be re-assigned to some part of X.org? But i
don't see this problem without gdm3.
I'm happy to take other screenshots, and to provide other feedback if
you tell me what sort of details you want from this system.
