If you can't stand network-manager, I'd advise you to disable it via
invoke-rc.d network-manager disable
The package dependency reflects what upstream does.
NetworkManager is deeply integraded into the GNOME 3 desktop, e.g. gnome-shell
and gnome-control-center, so the dependency is there for a reason.
