Bug#651934: FTBFS on sparc: seed binary dies with a bus error

I have gained access to a sparc box (initially to look at another bug) 
and have reproduced the issue but i've no idea where to go from there. 
Normally I would disable optimisation but I can find no evidence that 
the build is using it in the first place and I can't seem to figure out 
how to make gdb behave in conjunction with libtool wrapper scripts.

Seed maintainers can you provide any hints as to how to debug this?
