   * What led up to the situation?
moving the bottom-panel to the left side

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
     ineffective)?
alt-right-click on the bottom-panel and changing the settings to left
or
using the Configuraton Editor with "org.gnome.gnome-panel.layout.toplevels
..bottom-panel" and editing "Orientation" from "bottom" to "left"

   * What was the outcome of this action?
The system logged me immediatly off.

After logging in and starting any application the system logged me off again.

   * What outcome did you expect instead?
