   * What led up to the situation?

when you select "SHOW MOUSE-POSITION BY PRESSING CTRL KEY" in
gnome3 settings, the GUI is not able to use CTRL-key anymore in
multi-file-selections on directory-listings.

i think you should know this. pretty nice feature, but GUI-selection
with CTRL for multi-select must work !
