Nope, never heard of such a problem.
Are you saying that choosing "GNOME" or "GNOME login" in the gdm3 login
screen started twm?
Or did you use "system default" and /etc/alternatives/x-session-manager
was simply pointing to twm instead of gnome-session.
In the latter case, this looks like a local misconfiguration.
It's probably too late now, since you worked around the problem somehow,
but the output of "update-alternatives --config x-session-manager" would
have been interesting.
