package: GDM
version: 2.20.11-4
OS: Linux Mint Debian edition, up-to-date using only debian testing reporsitories, and having replaced gdm3 with gdm2.20

description: This system is an Acer Aspire laptop, model as5253-bz849 and has been working fine without incident for months as described above, using gdm 2.20 and xfce 4.8. This past week, I closed the laptop lid for about six hours. Upon re-opening the lid and resuming my session (entering password), I was presented with 102 (that is, yes, one hundred and two) identical message windows, each indicating "gdmflexiserver: cannot start new display, there were errors trying to start the x server".

I tried this a second time, and after about five hours, there were "only" 34 of these windows.
