no, i use a custom session that runs:
gnome-settings-daemon
gnome-keyring-daemon
trayer (to provide notification area)
nm-applet

(and a few not gnome related things + xmonad as window manager)

since reporting the original bug i discovered that also gajim is no
longer able to connect to gnome-keyring.

also between if it made a difference if i use gdm3 instead of slim as a
login manager (no change) or running gnome-session though that crashes
for some reason i have not really found yet.
