Doesn't look like a gnome-session problem, so re-assigning.
Could you test other composited desktop environments, like e.g. KDE/kwin
with compositing enabled.
Checking the Xorg.0.log, dmesg and ~/.xsession-errors for errors might
be a good idea. Attach them to the bug report.
Does this problem happen with gnome-shell 3.2, i.e. the version from
testing? Is this a regression, if so, which packages did you upgrade
since the regressions started (especially X related packages).
