Hi,

maybe as a data point for starting to bisect things, the error does not
occur, and cheese runs just fine, if I use this live dvd with the
exactly same hardware and camera where the on-disk image is failing:

IOW, I've now verified that the camera itself should be workable.

But incidentally, cheese is not the only program having problems with
the webcam, every other program seems to refuse to work with it, too.
