I have similar problems. Menus on panel cannot work (can pull down but
cannot select each item),
clicking "Activities button" shows windows list but then hangs.
Fortunately Ctrl+Alt+F1 is available, kill the gnome-shell process and
back to Window System,
everything can work again (but lost the workspace layout).
