It's most likely a theme issue.
Do you know which theme engine MediterraenanNight uses?
If it is unico, this is a bug in gtk3-engines-unico [1]
I'd recommend installing gnome-themes-standard and using the Adwaita
theme, since that is the default theme which is properly tested and
works with gtk 3.8.
