Because the filesystem is mounted with sec=krb5 and the Debian-gdm user 
doesn't have a kerberos ticket.

I guess it's partly a misconfiguration on my part, I'll check whether 
making the filesystem read-only and using the "squash_all" parameter on 
the export "fixes" the problem.

I'll be able to look at this Monday.
