I tried both nautilus and nemo.
Before the symlink, I witnessed the exact same behaviour as Matteo in the first report (opening ~/.thumbnails/fail/gnome-thumbnail-factory/, ENOENT), in both explorers.
After the symlink, stracing both nautilus and nemo shows successful opens of ~/.cache/thumbnails/normal/*.
I can help debugging this if you give me pointers.
